Selection of a second Green Light site: The Dar Fatma Peatlands in Tunisia

The Steering Committee has chosen Dar Fatma Peatlands in Tunisia as the next Green Light site, following the pilot site in Gökçe, Türkiye, a freshwater coastal wetland.

The proposed site was suggested by WWF-NA and is situated in the Kroumirie region. Hydrological perturbations and overgrazing mainly threaten this natural reserve and RAMSAR site. A rare species in the Mediterranean region, Sphagnum auriculatum, can be found in this area. The flora is becoming more homogeneous, reflecting the peatlands’ degraded state. The Tour du Valat team will visit the site in May with a peatland restoration expert, the WWF-NA, local experts and local administration.

A new call for expressions of interest for the third site will be launched in the middle of the year. Stay tuned!
